解説：群体は樹木状。枝の太さや分岐頻度は変異が大きい。後述するように、このことは隠蔽種が多く含まれていることに起因するかもしれない。
識別点：少なくとも２種の隠蔽種が含まれ、どちらが本種にあたるのか結論は出ていない。分子系統解析 (ミトコンドリア非翻訳領域) においても、図1～5の標本は
DIGITIFERA/NASTA GROUP、図6～7の標本は別の NASTA GROUP、図8は solitaryensis プレートタイプと同じグループになる。
分布と生態：礁池内から礁斜面下部まで広い範囲で見られる。地理的にも本州南部や九州から琉球列島まで分布するが、温帯域の集団 (図5) が同種かどうか更なる検討が必要。
備考：上記以外にも、隠蔽種が多数含まれてる可能性あり。元々、学名は Acropora formosa として広く認識されていたが、Wallace (1999) で見直されて、A. formosa は本種のシノニムとされた。リンネが命名した A. muricata の担名タイプは失われたため、Wallace (1999) でネオタイプが指定され、多数の種がシノニムと判断されたが、今後、分子系統解析による更なる再検討が待たれる。
