日本国内で確認できる有藻性サンゴ類の図鑑です。サンゴは多くの人に注目される生物でありながら、その同定が容易でないことが多い上に、近年、DNAや骨格の微細構造などを用いた系統解析が多くの分類群でなされてきており、分類体系がめまぐるしく見直されています。本図鑑では、可能な限り最新の研究結果を反映させつつ、随時、内容を追加・更新していきます。

本図鑑について

日本産の有藻性サンゴ類、いわゆる造礁サンゴ類^*1については、「日本の造礁サンゴ類」(西平・Veron 1995) や "Corals of the world" (Veron 2000) などの出版によって種レベルで同定できる生物として一挙に身近なものとなりました。これらは、その後の有藻性サンゴ類およびサンゴ礁の研究に多大な功績をもたらすエポックメイキングなものでありましたが、いずれも出版から20年以上が経過しています。

この間、有藻性サンゴ類の分類は大きく様変わりし、それまでの骨格形態に基づく分類からDNAなどの分子情報を反映した分類へと大きく進展しました。これによって、旧来の分類体系^*2と種認識^*3が大きく変更されると同時に、多くの種で隠蔽種^*4またはその存在を示唆する報告が続々となされてきており、種の多様性が従来の認識を大きく上回ることが明らかになってきています。しかし一般には、これらの変更を専門性の高い論文を逐一参照しなぞることは極めてハードルが高いと言え、より手軽な情報源としての新しい図鑑が切望されています。

そこで、有藻性サンゴ類の種認識の共有を図るべく立ち上げられた日本造礁サンゴ分類研究会のメンバーによって、これまでの成果の集大成としてWEB図鑑を公開するに至りました^*5。このWEB図鑑は、日本産の有藻性サンゴ類の分類と種認識の現状を共有し、より適切な種同定に資することを目的としています。また、図鑑は作成途上であり、今後も随時改訂し、できるだけ最新の知見を網羅する予定です。

現在、気候変動など地球環境の悪化に伴うサンゴ礁への脅威が増大する中で、サンゴ礁への関心と保全の必要性が一層高まっています。同時に、生態系保全における種多様性の重要性が広く認識されるのに伴い、有藻性サンゴ類についても種レベルでの同定の必要性はより一層高まっています。この図鑑がサンゴ礁に関わる皆様に活用され、サンゴ礁ならびに有藻性サンゴ類の研究の発展、ならびにその効果的な保全に資することを願います。

脚注：

＊1. 造礁サンゴ類 hermatypic corals：サンゴ礁を形成する役割を担うサンゴ類を意味する。有藻性サンゴ類 (zooxanthellate corals) は、体内に褐虫藻を共生させているサンゴ類を意味する。両者ともに分類学上の用語ではなく、主体はイシサンゴ目（花虫綱、六放サンゴ亜綱）で、その他に八放サンゴ亜綱に属するアオサンゴ属とクダサンゴ属、ヒドロ虫綱に属するアナサンゴモドキ属が含まれる（本図鑑で対象とするサンゴ類を参照）。両者は同義語として用いられることが多いが、有藻性サンゴ類であっても造礁に貢献しない例もあれば、褐虫藻が共生しない無藻性サンゴ類であっても造礁に貢献する例もある。また、主に高緯度海域や深海に分布する冷水性サンゴ礁は無藻性サンゴ類の働きによって形成されている。

＊2. 分類体系 taxonomic classification system：生物の種を共通する特徴によって「界・門・綱・目・科・属・種」などの階層にまとめる生物分類学のシステム。イシサンゴ類では近年の分子系統学的研究によって、そのまとめ方が見直されてきている。⇒ 参考：日本産イシサンゴ目分類体系の新旧比較

＊3. 種認識 species recognition：ここでは、形態または分子情報などの特徴から、それぞれの種の特性を認識し識別することを意味する。ちなみに、種同定 (species identification) は認識された種の特性と照合して、種名を調べること。

＊4. 隠蔽種 cryptic species：形態的に区別できず同一の種として扱われているが、本来は別種であるもの。産卵時期の違いや分子系統学的手法などで、その存在が明らかになることがある。

Launch of the Online Monograph of Zooxanthellate Corals of Japan

In Japan, zooxanthellate corals, which are generally called hermatypic corals, have become familiar as organisms that can be identified to the species level with publications, such as "Hermatypic corals of Japan" (Nishihira & Veron 1995) and "Corals of the world" (Veron 2000). These publications made epoch-making changes and contributed greatly to the study of zooxanthellate corals and coral reefs, but more than 20 years have passed since these publication.

Since then, the taxonomic classification of zooxanthellate corals has changed dramatically, moving away from the skeletal morphology-based classification to one that reflects molecular phylogeny. This has led to major changes in the taxonomic classification system and species recognition. Concurrently, many reports have published cryptic species or suggested their existence, and it has become clear that species diversity of zooxanthellate corals is far greater than previously recognized. However, in general, it is extremely difficult to track these changes by referring to highly specialized papers one after another. Thus, a new encyclopedia as a more convenient source of information has been long-awaited.

Therefore, the Japanese Society for Coral Taxonomy (JSCT), which was established to share information on zooxanthellate corals, has decided to open "The Online Monograph of Zooxanthellate Corals of Japan (https://coralmonogr.jpn.org)" as a culmination of their past achievements. This online monograph is intended to share the most current classification and species recognition status of Japanese zooxanthellate corals, and contribute to more appropriate species identification. The monograph is still in progress and will be revised as needed to cover the latest findings as much as possible.

With the increasing threats to coral reefs from climate change and other global environmental degradation, public interest in coral reefs and the need for their conservation are even more increasing. At the same time, as the importance of species diversity for ecosystem conservation is widely recognized, the need for species-level identification of zooxanthellate corals is also increasing. We hope that this monograph will be useful to all those involved in coral reefs, contributing to the development of research on coral reefs and zooxanthellate corals, as well as to their effective conservation.
